A few days later, Barry charged into Angie’s office with a series of faxed papers, licking his lips and grinning.

“We just got Misty’s signed agreement. It’s done. I need you to call Ryan to set up their first date for tomorrow. And I’ll need you to record a promo spot to start running ASAP.” He walked out of her office, and Angie followed him down the hall.

“Listen, Barry. Ryan’s a really nice guy, and I don’t think he signed on for—” It was one thing for Ryan to fall for someone other than her, and an entirely different thing for him to be manipulated.

“Don’t fuck with this, Angie. The network deal is on the line. This is my future. Either roll with it or, mark my words, get rolled over. Got it?”

“Got it.” She nodded reluctantly, since her mom’s house was on the line, too. Barry motioned to the office where Harlan was waiting with a camera set up to record her call.

“Now go play matchmaker!” he commanded, expecting Angie to not only facilitate Ryan and Misty’s courtship, but monitor, edit and share it for the world to see. He walked out of the room leaving Angie with a quivering lip and tightened chest.

“What was that all about?” asked Harlan.

“Nothing,” Angie mumbled.

“Oooo-kay,” said Harlan, clearly not wanting to get into a discussion about it.

“Can you just give me a minute?” she asked. Harlan walked out of the office. Angie’s eyes welled with tears.

How can I be a party to this charade? Would her broken heart survive bearing witness to this day after day? Ryan deserved more. He deserved better. He was a good guy. He was also a smart guy. He’ll see through her phony charms, right? Will anyone be good enough for him? She figured probably not, but Misty was awful. Wretched. Beyond the pale. Harlan knocked on the door, distracting Angie from the growing ire rising in her.

“Ready?” he asked.

Angie wiped away her tears. “Yeah. Come on in,” she said, picking up the phone and taking a deep breath. She dialed Ryan’s number and waited for him to pick up.

“Angie. So great to hear from you.”

“Hey,” she eked out.

“Are you okay? You sound strange.”

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“So, what’s up?”

“We got hold of Misty, and she’s very excited to finally meet you. We’ve arranged for you two to have dinner tomorrow night.”

“Will you be there?” he asked, with what Angie thought was a hopeful tone.

“No. Harlan will. And I’ll cut the piece the next day.” She didn’t tell him she would be sitting outside the restaurant in a truck, watching the closed-circuit feed live as it unfolded.

“Oh. Okay. Well, I guess this is good, right?”

“Yeah. This is what it was all about,” she said. “Good luck tomorrow,” she added before hanging up and hanging her head.
